From Mexico to France

When I first considered to have an experience as a foreign student, I would never imagined how it could look like.In life and in general, I prefer not to have any expectations. The only thing that was for sure was that when people come back to their country after having an experience overseas they are not the same anymore.

A Brazilian young woman’s exchange program in Lille

Dear readers, my name is Helena and I’m originally from Brazil. I’m a Psychology student at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais and at the moment I’m in an exchange program at the Université de Lille for the fall/winter semester of 2022. I’ve always dreamed of studying abroad and since I’m in my last year of my undergraduate studies I had to grab this chance.

For a private studio, apartment, or room in a shared flat, rental prices usually range between €500 and €700. You can obviously find cheaper options outside the city.

Find accommodation near Lille

In order to pay a lower rent, many students choose to look for accommodation in the cities surrounding Lille :

  • Villeneuve d'Ascq: this is actually where the campuses Cité Scientifique and Pont de Bois are located, making it a suitable option if you go to one of them. If your school is in Lille, do not worry: the subway serves the city. Reaching Lille's city center will not take you more than 30 minutes. Rental prices are cheaper than in Lille, generally around €500.
  • La Madeleine and Marcq-en-Baroeul: these 2 cities are located north-east of Lille, and offer a wide range of accommodation. Both are well served by public transportation.
  • Lomme-Lambersart: these 2 cities are located northwest of Lille. This is probably where you can find the cheapest accommodation options if you want to live close to Lille.

Where to stay in Lille

If you want to live inside Lille, there are very different areas you can stay in. Indeed, the districts of Lille are very varied, whether in terms of atmosphere, architecture, or facilities.

The best areas to live in as a student

Here are the areas that stand out as particularly suitable for students:

  • Lille Center: this includes areas such as Gare Lille Flandres, République Beaux-Arts, or Rue Solférino. With plenty of bars, restaurants, good public transportation and a lively atmosphere, Lille Center is a very popular neighborhood among students.
  • Vieux Lille: a charming neighborhood, where many historic buildings are located. The offer for private apartments and shared flats is particularly wide in this area. However, this is probably the area where the rental prices are the highest, and it is very unlikely to find a place with a parking spot if this is one of your requirements.
