Health care insurance (« Caisse Primaire d’Assurance Maladie » CPAM)

As other students in France, you have access to a health insurance (CPAM). In France, it is called “la Sécurité Sociale”.

What is your situation ?

1) You become a student from September 2018 onward

You are starting higher education after a graduating from High School.

Eligibility requirements for coverage

You need to have the eligibility requirements for universal health care coverage. This means you need to prove your stable and regular residence in France. It can be any document that attest your student status (an official certificate university enrollment, a copy of your student id…)
Be careful ! You may also be asked to give documents to prove legal residence in your country of origin.

How your medical expenses coverage work

From September 1st, 2019, if you are still a student, you will become a member of the local health insurance fund (CPAM) of your place of residence.
Reimbursement of your medical expenses

You will be reimbursed for any medical/maternity care expenses by the health insurance fund (CPAM) of your place of residence.
Before getting your health insurance card , you have to declare a referring doctor (a primary care physician). One of your choice !
Your health insurance card is an evidence of your health care coverage. Always show this card to any health care professional you see.

What happens if you have an accident or you get sick ?

As a student, your are insured for accidents and illnesses. This insurance covers the accidents that happen :
When you are in class or at the laboratory
During company internships if it is part of your educational program. Be careful ! In france, you need to sign an internship agreement before starting the internship.

Your supplementary coverage

In order to supplement your reimbursements from the French social security system, you can take out the supplementary health insurance of your choice. You can contact your parent’s supplementary insurance provider (EU country), or another supplementary insurer (other country), to bring up the rate of your medical fees reimbursement to 100%.

 

2) You were student in 2017-2018 and continue for 2018-2019

 

Eligibility requirements for coverage

Your health insurance provider will automatically extend your membership for a year without any application from you. From September 1st, 2018, the flat rate health insurance charges will not longer be payable.

3) You have a professional activity in parallel

If you work during your studies, you can join the national general scheme linked to your employment. To this end, you need to submit your employment documentation as a payslips, your employment contract… You will also need to prove a legal residence in France.

 

4) You finish/stop your studies in 2018

At the end of your studies, you will have to contact the closest health insurance fund (CPAM). The fund will handle your case and end your health insurance. Therefore, you can also contact a French Health Insurance aviser by phone at 36 46 (toll charge 0.06€/min + cost of the call). They are available from Monday to Friday to help you.
Advice : Keep your health insurance card. You will be able to update it later when your local health insurance fund will ask you to do so !
